~ v past tense thrived or throve, formal if something such as a company or plant thrives, it becomes very successful or very strong and healthy  (tree ferns that still thrive in tropical rainforests | a free-market economy in which businesses can thrive) thrive on sth phr v to enjoy or be successful in conditions that other people, businesses etc find difficult or unpleasant  (I wouldn't want that much pressure, but she seems to thrive on it.)
